First of all, we're old Sound Forge users, but when our last 32bit computer died, we needed a cheaper replacement.

Downloaded trial from the Magix site and it was an adequate replacement. So, we bought it here and that's when the install nightmare started. Here's how to install this if you've been using the Magix trial. Create an account at Sony Creative if you don't already have one.

You should have an account at Magix from the trial download. Log into your Sony Creative account and past the serial number in at the bottom of your registered software screen. There will be space for your unregistered software at the end of the list. This shoots you to a totally blank screen at the Magix site.

Wait a minute or two. Log into the Magix site and your new software should show up underneath the listing for your trial software. This is the version you should download and install. Okay - now comes the tricky part: Once you install the software from Magix, you may get a looping serial number screen. Getting rid of this requires editing your registry. If you are fairly secure digging in your Registry follow these instructions, but first a disclaimer. I take no responsibility if you don't know what you're doing with your Registry and wind up killing, maiming, or otherwise damaging your computer.

You break it, it's your responsibility. Or pay someone to do it. Even I hesitate to mess with the Registry. Click start button. In the search space right above the start button type regedit. You are looking for a file folder. Only look on the left hand side of Registry. Double check it is listed under Audio Studio 10 and not under any other Sony Creative program.

If you don't see it under 10, you're looking at the wrong side of the screen. Look left. Start your program and a new registration screen should appear. Copy and paste your registration number and you're good to go. Again, a warning. Messing with your Registry can cause your computer to fail.

If you don't know what you're doing, register the software at Magix and let them walk you through it. But the book of Riv Viers Sound effects bible gives you the needed information. For those who write, create music the Acid software is a better choice due to its ability to use loops, while Sound forge excels at recording, creating sound effects or repolishing audio files. Any of those daw will need you to buy additional plugins for sound effects.

For that purpose you can look at free plugins - 32 bit- version such as de esser from digitalFishphones I find the Sound Forge friendly for recording. After playing with those softwares and reading and re reading the book of Mike Senior or the SOS, music radar websites I begin to take a look at different daw at affordable price. Reaper with its 60 usd price is such one: it's unbeatable for some reasons: it can be used in Mac or Windows and at this price range it can be compared with the studio version of Sound Forge or Acid and it's only available on the internet Cuckos site and its peformances and abilities beat those stripped down studio version.

For beginner like me Audacity is another surprise: it's free and friendly to use, it has all the basic necessary effects like normalising there's free lunch after all and it's good. One practical conclusion: at this price range don't expect to have all the bells and whistles. You will have to buy or download additional plugins and, for that purpose, you can read the recommendations found on sos or music radar sites.

A daw is like a car, after chosing the model you have to look at the accompanying or offered packages. In music additional plugins can be quite expensive but you can find free plugins that you need.

No multi-track setup yet I have that in other places. For the price OK. If you know how to use this program it is a very good editor for sound files. If you don't have a clue you are one of the people who have written bad reviews. This is a good editing program for voice over and music editing. You can build in overlaps for cross fades, assemble live performances, overlay things like applause and otherixing operations. The LP ingest and noise suppression works well to remove pops and clicks.

This is not a multichannel mixing program so don't slam it for not being one. I have been editing audio, recording live performances and tightening them up to make CD's of for 15 years. There is no multi-channel support so it's either mono or stereo, and many of the most useful parts are absent from this cut-down version - no batch processing, no editing of unity MIDI note or other SMPL chunk data.

However, once you use this, there's no going back to Audacity, this is just a lot easier to use, faster, looks better, works better, and the plug-ins are much better quality, very impressed by the vocal remover although it wasn't something I expected to use. One person found this helpful.

Fair - but the cd authoring and burning facility is limited. You have to obtain CD Architect or other software to put track marks etc onto the CDs you make, otherwise it will only burn a 'track at once' from.
